Immersed in the devastating world financial crisis of the Great Depression, the year 1935 saw American film publicist Leo Seltzer looking for new ways to entice and entertain crowds. After observing the popularity of roller skating, he organised and promoted marathon endurance skate races. Like modern day Indy car racing, these event involved the skaters racing round and round a circular track, for up to 11½ hours a day, to cover 3,000 to 4,000 mile distances – the winner was the last man or woman standing and the races attracted competitors eager to make what small financial gains they could.

The women of the Pirate City Rollers are a nexus forging a union between different sections of society, maintaining links and shared spirit with local underground music scenes. A hybrid of cultural influences has contributed to the unique and independent principles on which the sport is conceived and the league is run. In a similar vein, Pirates & Pinups is proud to showcase in it’s soundtrack, locally sourced gems of the independent Rock n’ Roll, Ska, Punk, Hardcore, Metal, Alternative, Experimental and Electro scenes.
Watch this space for updates on a soundtrack and a community of musicians who have real connections to the characters within this film and who have helped support derby’s rise to popularity in New Zealand.
As well as tunes by local bands, Pirates & Pinups features a purpose built score (currently in production) with the potential to treat you nicely, evoke a bittersweet nostalgia for those skating days of old, rip out you heart and knock you on your ass at the same time. Taking an experimental approach to exploring and weaving subtle suggestions of genre and influence that have contributed the look and feel of the subject matter, the score of this film is shaping up to be both engaging and unexpected.

So you may have heard of Whip It?, the Hollywood film directed by Drew Barrymore. After eagerly awaiting it’s arrival on New Zealand shores, the crew at Pretty Brutal finally got to see it. In the aftermath, it became clear that “Pirates & Pinups”, the locally produced feature length documentary, is one Roller Derby story you have not seen! Witness the real life people, events and evolution behind NZ’s 1st Roller Derby league, The Pirate City Rollers, when “Pirates & Pinups” reaches a screen near you. In the meantime, please JOIN US here online! We could really use your support.
Being away from the glittering shores of Hollywood has its benefits and its drawbacks. On the one hand we have had the freedom to intimately explore the world of the Pirate City Rollers in a way that goes beyond stereotype and spectacle. On the other hand, our budget is far from the multi-million dollar Avatar spectacular. As of yet we have been working from skeletal resources and generously donated time. “Pirates and Pinups” is achingly close to finishing and we are bursting with excitement at the fact. However, without your continued support it may sadly never reach New Zealand’s screens. Over the coming week, www.prettybrutal.co.nz will be updated with all new features including production stills and an online store. Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming fundraising mission and jump to the “WE NEED YOUR HELP” section to view Pretty Brutal wares, to donate or to sponsor this worthy cause. Help us complete the final phases and bring our exciting New Zealand story to a local and international stage!
This Saturday, at Skateland in Pamure, come and see the daring ladies who are featured in ”Pirates & Pinups” perform live (see www.piratecityrollers.com for more details). As a tribute to “Whip It” the teams will be playing as the “Hurl Scouts” and the “Holy Roller” and Pretty Brutal will also be there with flyers and information on “Pirates & Pinups”.
